What is CMS?

CMS is short for Content Management System, they are web based applications designed to make it easy for non-technical users to add, edit and control their website. A large number of CMS software has been written in open source, which means its free to use.

WordPress, Joomla and Durpal are some examples of CMS programs available to download for free on the internet. The cost involved is where the web site is hosted and there are many companies offering this service (including MAG Web Design).

Content Management Systems assist website users with content editing, they also take care of a lot of technical work such as:

  • Automatically generate navigation elements
  • Making content searchable and indexable
  • Keeping track of users, their permissions and security settings
  • Choice of hundreds of themes, widgets and plug ins.
  • They are generally well supported by their own communities and many forums have been set up to answer tech questions.
